Shockwave Therapy for Foot Pain

At Prime Foot and Ankle Specialists, we are constantly on the search for innovative treatments for foot and ankle pain. As new, advanced technologies emerge, our podiatrists see that the results are less pain, faster recovery, less invasive procedures, and better success in improving patients’ foot health. One of these therapies that we offer is extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT).

What is it?

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses low or high intensity sound waves to treat a variety of issues, including tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, hallux limitus, and heel spurs. It has been a great option for those who need more than conservative treatments like rest, icing, orthotics, or physical therapy but who do not need surgery.

The benefits of using ESWT include:

  • Non-invasive procedure - Uses sound waves to help break up scar tissue and improve blood circulation to promote healing, all without incisions.

  • Few treatments - Typically only 2-3 treatments are necessary to improve foot pain. Each treatment may last 30 minutes.

  • Short recovery - Some mild bruising, tenderness, or numbness may occur after the procedure, but patients can resume activity after minimal recovery.

  • Optimal for athletes - When athletes are injured, they are often forced to choose between enduring pain and finishing their season, or completely stopping for an invasive procedure. This ESWT allows athletes to continue to stay active while addressing their pain.
