How Do You Treat Nail Fungus?

Of the many nail problems our podiatrists treat, toenail fungus is one of the most common. This condition is caused by a fungus that spreads and breeds beneath the toenail, and leads to discolored, brittle, thick nails. They are often slow to be noticed since toenails grow slowly and are covered. Some patients are too embarrassed to come in even after they are noticed. The best course of action to stop nail fungus from spreading or worsening is to get proper treatment from a podiatrist!

There are a variety of treatment options that our foot doctors provide, depending on the severity:

Topical

Topical creams are the most conservative and common treatment option that is available. While it can be messy, when combined with other methods, it can be effective in treating the fungus.

Oral

Antifungal medications taken orally can be effective as well. They are typically taken for several months to ensure that all of the fungus is eradicated, and blood work may be done to monitor liver function.

Laser

When toenail fungus cases are severe or frequent, oral and/or topical methods may not be sufficient. While topical treatments only reach the surface of the nail, laser treatment can penetrate the skin and nail to reach the fungus that is lurking underneath. Several sessions are typically done, which can be highly successful in promoting clear nail growth.

Surgery

The most aggressive form of treatment is surgery, which is reserved for severe cases of toenail fungus that have not responded to more conservative treatment methods. During the procedure, part of all of the nail may be removed for new healthy nails to grow in.
