Tips for Choosing Winter Footwear

Between Christmas, New Years, and all the other winter-time activities, the coldest season of the year can be full of hustle and bustle. While this busy time can bring plenty of happiness, togetherness, and plenty of fond memories, it can also bring about some tough weather. With freezing temperatures and icy walkways, it’s important to always ensure you’re taking every precaution possible – including wearing winter footwear.

Many people think they can get by with the same type of shoes year-round, but that’s simply not the case. Cold, wet weather requires proper winter shoes, even if you’re just out for a walk around the block. Read on to learn why you should choose the best winter wear for your feet.

Keep your feet warm!

The chilly weather comes with a beautiful snowfall, a warm fire, hot chocolate, and more pleasant things. Unfortunately, it’s also the season for colds and flu. Proving your mother right, scientists now say that warmer body temperatures help prevent catching a cold or the flu. Keeping your feet warm helps to open blood vessels and allows good blood flow, moving heat all along your body. This blood flow will boost your energy and help protect your immune system. Wearing proper winter footwear, especially if you are outside, can help keep you healthy.

Thermal socks and water-resistant boots are the best combination to combat cold feet. But if your feet are extra-sensitive to the cold, try slipping a heated toe warmer into your boot for some added heat.

Keep your feet dry!

Good hygiene is essential to overall body health, including in your feet. Regularly washing your feet with soap and water is one step to keeping them clean, but it’s also important to keep them dry during the day. Fungus loves wet areas and will readily cover your toes if it’s invited. Keep your feet dry to reduce the possibility of fungal infections.

Dry feet start with good shoes and socks. Waterproof boots are best for a snowy winter. Most waterproof winter footwear also allows breathability to reduce moisture build up from sweating. Speaking of sweating, if you know you’re prone to that, it’s always a good idea to bring an extra pair of thermal socks along and change them halfway through the day.

Keep your feet safe!

Safety concerns for drivers are always high on the winter topic list. It is also hazardous for pedestrians to walk around in slushy, icy weather, as a slip on an icy pathway can lead to a significant injury. If your usual walking route is not properly prepped after a big snowfall or isn’t de-iced regularly, some solid winter boots should help you traverse the path – or you might want to choose a different direction.

Plenty of winter boots nowadays have anti-slip technology to help navigate icy surfaces. These boots typically have extra grip while still providing good traction and support.
